Sixteen years ago, Belkis interviewed for a position as an Air Force JAG (Judge Advocate General) and didn't get it. For many, this could have marked the end of that specific dream. But as she said, "Just like every other challenge in my life, I refused to take no for an answer." That spirit of tenacity stayed with her.

Life continued with its own plans, filled with family commitments and the natural hurdles of a demanding career. Yet, the dream of serving her country in uniform never faded. In 2025, the opportunity she had worked toward for so long finally arrived. She was welcomed into the JAG Corps, ready to begin the next chapter of her professional life. This meant taking on one of the most demanding challenges of her life: Officer Training School (OTS).

The Crucible of Officer Training School

On the eve of her 40th birthday, Belkis found herself in the thick of OTS, an environment designed to test every aspect of a person’s being. Out of a class of 160 officer trainees, she was one of only two JAGs, a distinction that underscored the unique path she was on.

She described the experience as humbling, exhausting, and empowering all at once. The training was relentless. Recounting the final week, she shared, "The last week of my 30s was the most physically demanding of my life: miles and miles of running, marching, obstacle courses, and a full mock deployment with simulated attacks, clearing buildings, and recovering the injured."

This intense training is about more than physical endurance; it's a crucible for forging military leadership. It strips you down to your core, refines your strengths, sharpens your discipline, and reveals a well of capability you might not have known you possessed. For Belkis, it was a profound reminder of her own strength and resilience.

Graduation day was a whirlwind of powerful emotions. It represented the triumphant end of a grueling journey and the beginning of a new one. The day was filled with moments that will last a lifetime: swearing in some of the newest officers of the U.S. Space Force, receiving her first salute from her cousin Jeffrey, and walking off the parade field into the arms of her family.

Saying goodbye to the people she had bonded with so deeply during training was harder than she expected. "I’m leaving behind some of the most incredible people I’ve ever met," she reflected. "We pushed through challenges together, grew together, and became something greater together."

This sense of community and shared struggle is a cornerstone of military leadership. It builds a foundation of trust and camaraderie that lasts a lifetime. As she walked toward her family, she felt an immense sense of gratitude for their unwavering support. "I’m endlessly grateful for their love, patience, and belief in me every step of the way," she said.

"I’ve met and exceeded so many of the goals I once set for myself — but I can never leave a dream unrealized.
