Charged With a Crime in Jacksonville? What Plata Schott Law Needs to Evaluate Your Case
Half of the criminal calls we receive are about matters we do not handle, which costs the caller a day they did not have. Read this first. If your case is on our list, you will know exactly what to bring, and we can give you a real assessment in one conversation.
What criminal cases does Plata Schott Law take?
Felony and misdemeanor charges in Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Nassau County at the trial level: violent offenses, domestic violence, drug offenses, theft and fraud, weapons charges, DUI, sex offenses, and probation violations. We also handle pre-arrest matters when police or a detective want to "ask you a few questions," and we handle sealing and expunging records for eligible clients. We are a trial firm: we prepare every case as if it will be tried, because that is what produces dismissals and reductions. Learn more: criminal defense.
What criminal matters does the firm not handle?
Appeals, post-conviction relief (3.850 motions, habeas), expungements where you are not otherwise our client, standalone civil rights claims against police (Section 1983), federal cases, traffic tickets that are not criminal, and cases outside Northeast Florida. If that is what you need, tell us in the first minute and we will point you to someone who does that work.
What do you need from me before the consultation?
Your charging documents: the arrest report or affidavit, the notice to appear, the bond paperwork and conditions, and the information or indictment if one has been filed.
Your next court date, the judge and the case number.
Your record: prior arrests, convictions, diversion, and whether you are currently on probation or have an open case anywhere else. We will find it anyway; it helps to hear it from you.
The evidence you know about: video, texts, social media, witnesses, and anything police took from you.
Who you have talked to: whether you gave a statement, whether a detective has called, and whether anyone from the State Attorney's office or a victim advocate has reached out. Do not talk to any of them again until we have met.
How much does a criminal consultation cost?
Between $25 and $500 depending on the charge, and it is confidential. We will give you our honest read on the case, including when the best outcome is a negotiated one, and a flat quote for representation.
