Belkis Plata on ICE at Schools: Know Your Rights
After Duval County Public Schools issued guidance on how schools will respond to immigration agents, News4JAX asked Belkis Plata to weigh in. Belkis said the district’s guidance was within the confines of the law. She shared that at least a dozen families had contacted her about rumors in the community, and stressed the importance of parents and children knowing their rights.
She also corrected a common misconception: a child asking for a parent does not, by itself, legally require questioning to stop.
