Belkis Plata on the Death-Penalty Appeal in the Perrywinkle Case
As the man sentenced to death for the murder of Cherish Perrywinkle pursued a new trial, News4JAX asked Belkis Plata to explain the appeal. Belkis, who is not involved in the case, said it’s common for appeals to challenge trial counsel’s strategy. She noted that the judge checked with the defendant throughout the trial and he agreed with his lawyers’ decisions.
While death-penalty appeals can succeed, she said, he was represented by experienced trial lawyers, and the appeals process can last many years.
